Category Race calls out a category (animals, food, jobs) and a letter; students race in pairs to write as many matching words as they can in 60 seconds. It needs zero prep and instantly reactivates vocabulary from a previous unit right before you need it.
What it practices
This game drills vocabulary recall, not grammar — pick the category to match the lesson ahead:
- Concrete categories (animals, food, jobs, clothes) — reliable for A1, since every student already has some words.
- Broader categories (feelings, city problems, banking terms) — needs a wider vocabulary range, better for B1.
How to run it
- Pick a category that matches the lesson ahead animals before an animals reading, jobs before a jobs role-play.
- Announce a starting letter or skip the letter constraint entirely for lower-level groups.
- Give exactly 60 seconds a visible timer (phone or board) keeps the energy up and the game short.
- Have pairs read their list aloud the rest of the class crosses out any word another pair already said.
- Score only surviving words whoever has the most non-duplicate words left wins the round.
- Run a second round with a new letter or category tied to that day's vocabulary, if time allows.
Classroom management tip: ban proper nouns and words borrowed untranslated from the students' first language before starting, or you'll spend the round arbitrating instead of racing.
Level variations
- A1Skip the letter constraint entirely — naming words in the category (“animals”) is challenge enough on its own.
- A2Add the letter constraint and require full nouns spelled correctly, not just remembered fragments.
- B1Use abstract categories (feelings, city problems, banking terms) that need a wider working vocabulary.
